Research shows that many people react differently to different types of hypnotic induction - yet many hypnotherapists are confined to using only one technique. This practical book makes three radically different types of hypnosis easy to use in daily hypnotic work, exploring the methods of Milton H. Erickson, George Estabrooks and David Elman, presenting them in such a way as to allow a clear and accessible understanding. A resource for all students, trainers and therapists, it includes a range of powerful scripts for improved hypnotic work.

Tad James

Charismatic and possessing a profound ability to bring out the best in people, Dr Tad James was a staunch believer in the inexhaustible inner potential of human beings. He was an exciting, dynamic and  transformational seminar leader, and a pioneer in the field of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). As a successful personal success coach and NLP Master Trainer, Tad was the creator of a revolutionary new paradigm for human change known as the Time Line therapy technique.

Tad James taught NLP, Time Line therapy and hypnosis for over 35 years, and served as President of the American Board of Hypnotherapy for over 20 years. He was the author of seven books and numerous audios and videos in the field of NLP, including the bestselling The Secret of Creating Your Future, which shows people how to realize their goals in life. In 1999 Tad wrote Hypnosis: A Comprehensive Guide, a bestseller in the hypnosis field, and in 2001 he co-authored Presenting Magically, which details all his training expertise and secrets. Actors James Brolin and Linda Gray loved his work so much that they hosted an infomercial with Tad in 1994 that promoted audiotape versions of his book, The Secret of Creating Your Future. In addition to his interests in NLP and hypnosis training, Tad was a student, researcher and respected teacher of the healing and shamanistic science of Hawaiian Huna. His two volumes of The Lost Secrets of Ancient Hawaiian Huna were published in 1998.

Tad James attended Syracuse University and graduated with a master's degree in mass communication. He began his career as a manager of a radio station, and went on to manage his own station at a later date. At this time, the plight of the small businessman led him to become a business consultant. While doing business consulting he realized he could not help everyone he wanted. Even though his master's degree was in mass communication, he found something missing in the art of communication between humans. He began to research into powerful ways of communicating and creating change within both people and  organizations, and this led him to the field of NLP. Made the second NLP Master Trainer by Richard Bandler, one of NLP's founders, Tad quickly recognized the value of high involvement and shorter trainings.

Because of his dedication, hard work and unmatched discovery of the Time Line therapy technique, it did not take long before Tad rose to become a leader in the field of NLP. His name duly became synonymous with NLP excellence: he trained and certified more successful trainers than even the founders of NLP. His sole aim was to give his best and to bring out the best in every person he met in his trainings.

Tad James was the first NLP trainer to do a Learn NLP Training in an accelerated format. A leading advocate for expanding human potential and efficiency, he designed and implemented the seven-day NLP training program before anyone else did. His innovative spirit sometimes led to controversies, however. Initially met with opposition, his accelerated seven-day format (with pre-study) has since become the industry standard.

In 1988 his research became more widely known with the publication of his first book, Time Line Therapy and The Basis of Personality. Since then, Time Line therapy techniques have become a major modality for creating powerful change in business, education and therapy. Time Line therapy utilizes a person's own internal Time Line' to work with their unconscious minds in a variety of ways, including healing emotional
traumas and eradicating unwanted thoughts, emotions and behaviors. It has been so successful in its results that thousands of people ' including psychiatrists, psychologists, marriage and family counselors, social workers, life and business coaches, and even athletics coaches ' have utilized it for over a decade. It is so highly regarded that the Council of Psychotherapy in Croatia asked to be trained by Tad in Time Line  Therapy so that they could help many of the victims of the war who were suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome.

Tad appeared on hundreds of local and national television programs throughout North America, Europe, Australia and the UK ' sharing his breakthrough techniques and empowering his students. Throughout his career Tad had only one dream: to empower people to find their best potential both inside themselves and collectively in order to transform the planet'. Tad traveled extensively while delivering trainings and seminars in the USA, Canada, UK, Europe, Asia and Australia, sometimes being away from home 11 months per year.

Since 2001, his wife Dr Adriana James joined him in his work, and together they founded The Tad James Co., one of the world's leading and most innovative NLP companies. The couple quickly emerged as a dynamic team, and together they developed new techniques and paradigms for prosperity, health and success. Their legacy of life focuses on the success and accomplishment of all their students. Tad's books, audios, videos and seminars have been used by hundreds of thousands of people around the world to create happier, more fulfilling lives.

The 'NLP Lifetime Contribution Award, awarded following a public vote, was presented to Tad James at the 2017 NLP awards ceremony.

Reviews

  1. Hypnosis: A Comprehensive Guide by Tad James has become a modern classic and the bedrock of initiation into the profession today for many clinical hypnotherapists and NLP practitioners. Tad James views the trance phenomenon as the optimal means of plummeting the depths of the client's intangible unconscious mind in order to promote subliminal learning and to activate the mind-body healing connection.
Tad James primarily examines the work of Milton Erickson and offers the reader an insight into functional working practices as well as allaying many ludicrous misconceptions about hypnotic phenomenon. The author subscribes to Erickson's permissive hypnotic patterns of indirection suggestion and his paradigm of client-preparation, trance induction and utilisation in order to effect therapeutic change. Hypnosis sets out clearly and concisely the technicalities of the Milton Model of Hypnotic Language Patterns, with its key components of ambiguity and utilisation, as the most effective means of gaining rapport and permitting effective communication with the client's unconscious mind. The NLP Meta Model, with its concepts of distortion, generalisation and deletion, is also evaluated as the solution to identifying the client's presenting symptoms and unravelling the information gained from his personal history. In Tad James' tribute to the master, the hypnotic metaphor is, most importantly, portrayed elegantly as if it came directly from Erickson's lips.
The reader of Hypnosis will be guided through the process of understanding trance phenomenon, suggestibility testing, trance-levels and ideomotor questioning as well as an interactive method of hypnotherapy which contains inbuilt client-questioning. This book is admirably packed to gunnels with case-study examples and how-to-do-it guides which can either be followed to the letter or be used as a means of allowing the practitioner's creativity to blossom.
From the work of George Estabrooks, Tad James culls the principles of progressive test-oriented inductions, deepening techniques and post-hypnotic suggestion together with the notion of bypassing the client's conscious critical factor as expounded by Dave Elman. To the work of these pioneers, Tad James then contributes his own special ingredient from his extensive experience of NLP and Timeline Therapy practice. I am personally heartened that Tad James does not hesitate to warn NLP practitioners and clinical hypnotherapists of the limitations and contra-indications of using purely cognitive-behavioural hypnotic techniques for the client with a life-threatening illness or suffering from deep-seated traumatic distress.
  2. An excellent introductory text for students beginning to study the art and science of hypnosis. For those already knowledgeable about hypnosis, there are many nuances that will enable you to increase the elegance of your work.
  3. This is the sort of book that makes a reviewer`s job worth doing. It is a gem. Well-written, well-paced and packed with information. [It] is a book that everyone with an interest in hypnosis will want to own.
  4. Overview:

I love this book. It's content not only trains anyone mastering hypnosis skills to come from an inner position, which pulsates with unconditional positive expectations. It combines this attitude with clear practical steps and procedures that practitioners direct and use to guide clients in trance to hold their outcomes for themselves. Highly satisfying.

    Evaluation:

Content of the book, authors approach to the subject and authors conclusion

In each of the following chapters, the authors offer a picture of how an overview of the topic links in with some important and specific details. This is very evident in the chapters: Introduction to the mind/body connection, and brief history of hypnosis. Additionally, options for those of us who like alternative ways of learning the procedures of trance are also presented.

You can notice how good you really are, whilst improving your existing skill base, and gaining some new skills through reading the well-written Milton model patterns of hypnotic language chapter. Further mastery is offered to the reader in the utilization chapter by investigating the options and procedures for making use of what is going on in the actual stages of trance inducement. The next treat in the book comes from the releasing of concerns or worries about what to do at the beginning of a session with a client. In an enjoyable manner, the chapters describe talking to clients as you take their personal history. Emphasizing the necessary pre talk and suggestibility tests used in those stages in enjoyable ways. Reliably, more of the highest skills are described in the chapters dealing with the Stages of hypnosis, deepening techniques and post hypnotic suggestions. Without fail the book acquaints the reader with Ericksonian and Elman. Their methods, inductions and interventions are dependably put in plain words. It is the appendix, bibliography and index, which make the book a reliable resource for academic environments.

Book placed in the context of its field. Its significance within the field It helps anyone who is willing to take control of his or her skill base.

    Strengths and weaknesses:

Increasing the value of the text is its focus on the fundamentals as its basics. It then forms the jump of point for many applications in many environments. This potential could be flagged up in the appendix or some other part of the text. This will continue to sustain readers who are not from a therapeutic background. Initially, this type of development could be highlighted possibly in a table or some other graphic. Continuously appreciating the power of its applications can help all sorts of markets invite the use of this text into their training. Spin off texts can be written to help them specifically to make use of hypnotic language patterns in their practice. This so called weakness provides a welcome opportunity for the authors to continue to help guide a broader market, or at least inspire others to develop their specialism with ethical hypnotic language.

Another opportunity for the text is that it can help to increase the reader's ability to value the link between shamanism, and today's modern 'village helpers and healers'. This opportunity is possibly best found in the mind/body connection chapter.

How successful is the text in meeting its goals:

Experience has its rewards. And this book thrives because it pinpoints the necessary for the reader, which is derived from the author's profound familiarity with the practice of the subject. Very satisfying to know your in the hands of top level experts.

    How well suited to target

    Well suited to existing market.

    Recommendations:

    Regarding the academic market

Summaries at the end of each section which reconfirm the outstanding aspects of the section
Summary to include for the academic market, an annotated bibliography, a series of suggestive essay type questions (e.g. compare and contrast, describe, etc).
Support for academics in the form of example lesson plans (possibly free the Web)
Model questions and answers to simple questions found in the summary. Comment on issues regarding assessment is necessary in an academic environment. So examples of how assessment could pass an academic environment would be essential.
