Rather than offering quick fixes or exam-focused strategies, Why Haven’t They Passed Yet? invites teachers to look deeper - beyond grades, targets, and accountability measures to the real barriers learners face in developing literacy.

Written by a collective of experienced Further Education and Skills (FES) English teachers, and curated by Kayte Haselgrove, the book brings together decades of classroom insight, speaking directly to those working with learners who are disengaged, demotivated, or simply struggling to meet the demands of gaining English qualifications.

The contributors draw on their diverse experiences across the UK to examine the wide range of factors that can hinder success – from confidence and identity to prior educational experience. Every chapter offers experience and theory as well as actionable ‘takeaways’ - ideas that can be applied immediately in the classroom to re-engage learners and support meaningful progress.

Rather than isolating issues such as SEND or mental health, the book weaves inclusivity throughout, recognising that these factors are inseparable from everyday teaching practice. It is designed to be read cover-to-cover or can be dipped into as needed, making it both a reflective companion and a practical toolkit.

Ultimately, this book is about students and teachers rediscovering their purpose. It reminds us that while exams matter, the true goal of teaching English is to empower learners to think, express themselves, and navigate the world with confidence
